5 Essential Tips for Mastering Long-Term Consistency in Data Visualization
5 Essential Tips for Mastering Long-Term Consistency

As a dashboard designer, aim to improve your skills over the long term.

It’s easy to quit. Most people will.

They don’t want to do the work. They’re looking for the easy way out.

That doesn’t exist.

If you stay consistent, you’ll continue to enjoy your work. You’ll stay at the front of the pack. And you’ll become more employable.

Here are five methods I use to focus on my long-term success:

1. Learning, Participation & Collaboration

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in dashboard design.
  • Attend webinars.
  • Take online courses.
  • Sign up for workshops.
  • Get involved in the design community. This will provide new perspectives, feedback, and a support network.
  • Collaborate with other designers. Working with others will help you learn different approaches and techniques.

2. Collect Feedback & Reflect

  • Seek feedback on your dashboards.
  • For each project, ask: – What worked well? – What didn’t work well? – What should I keep doing?
  • Constructive criticism is invaluable for improvement. But remember to also ask about what you’re doing well.

3. Experiment with New Tools and Techniques

  • It is important to learn various tools and design techniques.
  • Try new software.
  • Experiment with different visualization methods.
  • Explore interactivity you haven’t done before.

4. Setting Personal Development Goals

  • Establish stretch goals for your skill development.
  • Perhaps you want to learn new tools.
  • Or you want to improve your user experience design.
  • Or you want to master a particular type of visualization.
  • Make sure the goals aren’t easy to achieve.

5. Building a Diverse Portfolio

  • Work on a variety of projects to build a diverse portfolio.
  • You’ll get exposure to different challenges and requirements.
  • This will help you broaden your skill set and experience.
  • You can prove what you’ve done and how you’ve improved.

Follow these tips and you’ll build a mindset of long-term improvement.
